This wonderful statement pin or pendant by the talented Navajo silversmith Herman Smith is a striking example of contemporary Southwestern artistry with exceptional detail and versatility. The dramatic butterfly motif features finely executed repoussé work forming the butterfly’s head, body, and lower wing tips, while elegant twist wire antennae add movement and dimension. Bold decorative stampings radiate across the wings, giving the piece remarkable texture and visual impact. Hidden just behind the butterfly’s head is a shepherd’s hook, allowing the piece to be worn as an enhancer on beads or placed on a paperclip chain, while the large backing beneath the hook also allows it to be worn as a pin. Hallmarked Sterling in script and HS where the wings meet on the reverse, this beautiful piece was personally purchased at Lone Mountain Turquoise Co. in Tubac, Arizona in January 2024 and has never been worn.
